The African Museum of Namur purports to offer its visitors a reflection of the soul of the African continent, such as it appeared to the explorers of central Africa at the end of the 19th century, as well as a place of reflection on thelaboursand sacrifices of the pioneers of the great African saga. It wants to be a living didactic tool, showing the young generations what was accomplished by their elders in that magnificent country, achievements as well as mistakes. Collections and description of rooms The entire collection of the museum comes from donations made by institutions or private donors. These ever more numerous gifts bring the curator and his team of volunteers to review continually the arrangement of rooms, as a living museum cannot remain fixed. Objects in the collections are allocated by themes in the various rooms and spaces and allow the visitors to get an overview of history, culture, fauna, flora, arts, weapons and objects of daily use of the indigenous population of our former colony. To help identify the rooms and space, these have been designated with a letter of the alphabet and dedicated to the people who distinguish themselves in the civilising, humanitarian and cultural work accomplished in the Congo, before and after its independence. Among those are found Namur pioneers as well as religious, lay or military personalities, ancient as well as contemporary. |
